Sometimes normal everyday conversation is just boring. So this week I decided to ask a question to my circle of friends that I was genuinely interested in knowing what their answer was: If you could have any career in the world, what would it be? You don’t have to care about money at all, just do something for the rest of your life, what would you do?
I was interested to see what they would answer because they are currently in a position I was in four years ago. They are starting college in a course of their choice and they would one day have to actually decided what job they want to take and, supposedly, according to the course they have taken.
One of my friends answered that she wanted to stay at home and write for a living, if she could. She would write young adult fiction novels. Another friend said he would be a professional gamer (League of Legends preferred) – but on second thought he said he’d rather be a food critic who awards Michelin stars to restaurants all over the world. Another friend said she wanted to be a marine biologist and dive underwater and take photos of strange and wonderful sea creatures. This was two days ago. They’re currently in communication studies and english courses respectively (the last two from english).
Yesterday I asked two more friends. One guy said he wanted to be an architecture and that he was fascinated with buildings old and new – and that’s why he attempted to take a course in architecture during his first semester. That, or a painter. The other one said he wanted to be an engineer or he wanted to programme simulation video games. One of them was studying business and the other economics.
Today I asked a few more folks. One girl wanted to be a social worker or she wanted to do something related to history. She was studying accounting. Another guy said he wanted to do something related to foreign policy – or be a stripper (though I think he was joking with the latter). His degree was in public policy.
After hearing all the answers, I feel (even more so) that it’s silly to ask someone what they’re studying, or what they’re degree is and assume that that is what they aspire to be. Not all english students want to be english teachers or writers, not all engineers want to be engineers in the future. It’s so much richer and fun to ask someone what they want to be if they are just given the choice to pick a career, just any career. It’s interesting to see whether they choose straightforward, politically correct answers, or ambitious ones.
Myself? I love stories. And I always wanted to be a writer, but if I could honestly just choose a career to do that would possibly be amazing, it would either be a video game story writer, scriptwriter or a Disney/Pixar animator.
So, I pose this question to you, to think long and hard, or not long at all, if you had no monetary restraints, if you could just do anything, what career would you choose?
The answer might surprise you. 🙂
Till next time,
