So today’s challenge is all about my favourite pick-me-up song. To be honest, I really don’t turn to music lately to ‘pick-me-up’, which is quite harrowing considering that music was my go-to when I was a teenager whenever I felt really alone in the world. It is even more disconcerting considering that I was in choir for two years of my life in which singing with my friends was one thing that just kept me going in life – yes, my own glee club. So you should expect that I knew all the songs that made me feel instantly better. But that’s just not the case. Nowadays whenever I need to de-stress and snub my baking insecurities I usually just turn to Let’s Plays on Youtube or watch another video of the Sacconejolys where Emilia tries to avoid naptime or a bath again.
Because of all these reasons, it was pretty trying to select a song that would pick-me-up in today’s context. What song would be equivalent to a shot of serotonin from seeing another Town of Salem video from ChilledChaos or ZeRoyalViking in my subscription feed? Or skyrocket me to cloud nine as much as a McDonald’s McFlurry delivery straight to my house at 11pm on a Friday night (maybe with a side of nuggets and fries)?
Well, I guess these four songs could probably do the trick …
“I Wanna Get Better” by Against the Current and The Ready Set (originally by The Bleachers)
I really like the original, but I love this cover. And it really does make me feel better listening to it. Maybe because of the repetition of the refrain “I wanna get better”. Even though the actual lyrics and the content, if you scrutinise them, is actually really depressing, it just has a catchy beat that overrides it. Plus, the realism kind of makes you feel okay about listening to it when you’re sad. You can be angry but this song makes you want to “get better”.
“Good Time” by Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City
This song genuinely just puts me in a carefree mood. It makes me think of Friday nights, having nothing more to worry about, sleeping late or sleeping too much and waking up the next morning not caring about anything. Plus, so many Youtubers have either covered this song or lipsynched in it and I honestly have never seen them look happier singing any other song than this. It just has the feel good vibes!
“Brave” by Sara Bareilles
I feel like if anyone I know is feeling down, this is probably the song that I’ll send them immediately. The video itself is all about self-expression and courage, something that sadly individuals in today’s world sometimes feel they’re not entitled to. To which I quote …
It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case, you fail by default.”
― J.K. Rowling
“Top of the World” by The Carpenters
Yup, an absolutely corny and somewhat contrived song. But you have to admit that if you just lose yourself to the melody and sing along you’re just going to instantly feel ridiculously better – how? Carpenters, how?
So, thank you for reading today’s post if you made it all the way through! Thank you honestly for just making it through the challenge, whether you were considering your own songs along the way, or you just came to check out what songs I’d put down. The last three songs are on their way. If you can’t wait for them, and want to check out some more song, go over to Rhey of Sunshine’s blog as she’s accomplishing the challenge alongside me.
I’ll catch you tomorrow for my favourite song to dance to – which is difficult cause I don’t dance. 🙂
