I hope you have been enjoying, thus far, my attempt at the 30 Day Movie Challenge. Please hit the link to Rhey of Sunshine’s blog to see how she’s been tackling the same challenge as well.
We’re on the final stretch right now and today’s challenge involves us choosing our favourite musical film! Now, if it were musicals as a whole, I think it would be an extremely tough battle ’cause I have so many that I absolutely love, from the renown Broadway musicals such as Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Wicked, to the more kitsch ones like Spring Awakening, and even my favourite Team StarKid from Youtube such as Me and My Dick, Starship and A Very Potter Musical – if I had to choose between all these incredible musicals that have such a strong place in my heart, I know I would just end up putting in a playlist here. But in terms of films, my favourite has to be, or should I say “a few of my favourite things” come from …

I’ve watched quite a number of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, such as South Pacific, The King and I and Flower Drum Song. But I believe the one that is closest to my heart is definitely the story of the rebellious nun, Maria, who sent to be a governess for the Von Trapp family, a family which consists of a stern Captain father and his seven children. There Maria achieves the impossible, she brings music back into the families life.
This movie is so close to my heart because its another film that I had on video cassette as a kid. Actually, now that I recall it, I did mention this in a post I made back when, called “all the movies i’ve watched so far” and I shall quote the paragraph I made there:
movies are nostalgic. full stop. movies aren’t always about the films themselves, but the familiar emotions that arise from you when you recollect scenes and phrases in those movies. essentially, going back to a movie is like a time capsule of yourself back then. it reflects who you were, and partially of who you are. after all, many of us go through our every day lives reliving moments in movies and coming across familiar references to movies. sometimes they are the maps that guide us subconsciously in everyday society.
After I stated this paragraph I put in a lovely picture of Brigitta, my favourite Von Trapp child. Here’s another lovely picture of her:

The Sound of Music was literally the music of my childhood; sleepy, I would sing “So Long, Farewell”, learning music I would sing “Do-Re-Mi”, when it was raining outside I would simply thinking of “My Favourite Things”, my dad used to always hum “Edelweiss” and last but not least, thanks to this film, my favourite number for a long time was sixteen, ’cause I wanted to be “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”.
I was probably only six when I first watched this movie. And back then, honestly the first half of the movie was my favourite. I just remember how beautiful young Julie Andrews was, how terrified I was of the Captain, how I thought Liesl was absolutely beautiful but also strong-headed and stubborn, how their dresses and outfits were so mesmerising and gorgeous and how I saw myself as Brigitta.
In fact, when I was ten there were castings for The Sound of Music in my hometown, Perth, and I desperately wanted to try out for the position of Brigitta, but then decided against it, ’cause I was probably not who they were looking for in a role like that – my classmate managed to get in one of the final rounds but didn’t make it either.
I would watch The Sound of Music with mattresses sprawled in my living room and just curl up in blankets and pillows and sing-a-long to the songs.

Looking back on it now, my favourite song will always be “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, just something about skipping across benches in a gazebo in moonlight steals the show- but really choosing any song is like trying to choose your favourite child, ’cause they all have their memorable and absolutely lovely moments to them.
