30DDC Day 30: What I want to see in Series 8

DDC-30Day1

And here we are, about a hundred gifs and dozen of videos later, on the last day of the 30 Days of the Doctor Challenge. Tomorrow, the new Doctor Who episode for Series 8 will be out. Us Whovians have been waiting for this with bated breath.

Despite the apparent spoilers that have gone around that have spoilt the initial launch of this new series, I have been keeping myself mostly in the dark. Unlike most fans who have probably watched Doctor Who all their lives since they were young, completely immersed in the fandom, I’ve pretty much started watching it in December last year, and try to keep myself apart from all the hype – it feels as if there is a difference between my twelve-year-old Harry Potter fandom self and me now.

All that I currently know of are the teaser trailers and the episode synopsis that Steven Moffat has recently released. (You can find them here.)

So, what do I want to see from Series 8?

DDC-30Day2

Firstly I want to see what the dynamics between Clara and this new Doctor will be like. It’s apparent that Clara and the 11th Doctor had a strange friendship bordering on possible romance that can be paralleled to Martha and the 10th Doctor – but now that Peter Capaldi has put his foot down against a love interest developing, I’m excited to see how the friendship will develop.

Personally, I’m looking forward to new companions as well. Not that I don’t love Jenna, but I would love to see other possibilities. I’m also looking forward to new villains that can possibly rival the Weeping Angels and the Silence, ones that challenge the new doctor and also enable him to show more wrath against his enemies.

I’m also hoping to see the writers explore more on the themes of humanity. I hope they don’t take the “time travel” aspect for granted and try to push more boundaries in terms of understanding human compassion or hatred. I think with today’s circumstances, with all the heated debates on war and human rights, Series 8 of Doctor Who should try and wrestle with the differing views of our place in the world to make decisions for ourselves and others.

Enough talk.

Series 8 tomorrow! Excited! For now enjoy the trailer:

30DDC Day 29: Favourite Music/Song

“I am the Doctor”

Honestly, I don’t browse the range of Doctor Who music from the past few years, but I remember this one passing through my dashboard when I was on Tumblr last month and I absolutely loved it and bonked myself on the head for not listening to the Doctor Who soundtracks more. If you guys have any other suggested tracks, or better options, feel free to let me know.

30DDC Day 25: Favourite Tardis Team

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship Crew

Which, other than the 11th Doctor, Amy and Rory, featured the likes of Mark Williams (Arthur Weasley) as Rory’s dad, Brian, Queen Nefertiti and Rupert Graves (Lestrade from Sherlock) as a game hunter, John Riddell. This episode also featured David Bradley (Filch in Harry Potter) as Solomon, the villain – it’s practically a crossover heaven. Moreover it was entertaining watching Brian freak over, one moment, changing a lightbulb and then suddenly materialising in the TARDIS, Rory having to try to explain everything to him, Amy having a history fangirl moment over Queen Nefertiti, and the shipping of Nefertiti with the game hunter.

30DDC Day 24: Favourite Accessory of the Doctor’s

The Doctor’s Fob Watch

When I saw the Doctor’s fob watch, in my mind I though, “That is definitely one souvenir I would get from Doctor Who.” Currently I have Doctor Who mugs (from Society6) and a miniature (11th Doctor’s) sonic screwdriver. I would personally love to have the fob watch, mostly due to how gorgeous the sketch of Gallifrey is on the casing. I would go crazy if they had a miniature version of it as a necklace – I think carrying around a fob watch is not really my thing.

30DDC Day 22: Something Silly

Wasn’t too sure whether it meant the actual TV show or something Doctor Who related, but I just had to share this. I’ve watched it so many times and I keep coming back to it when I want a laugh. Plus it’s very silly.

But if you want something from the series itself, I give you one of my favourite moments …

30DDC Day 21: Favourite Location

Lake Silencio, 22nd April 2011, 5.02pm (Lone Rock Beach, Lake Powell, Utah, USA)

I found an awesome website for location guides of Doctor Who here for your perusing. It took me a little bit of clicking to come up with a location that struck me as absolutely breathtaking. (Didn’t want to have to go back to Vincent and the Doctor.)

For me, Doctor Who was never really much about the locations, ’cause I assumed that a majority was shot in the UK itself (which don’t get me wrong, is beautiful, but that doesn’t leave for much of a wide spectrum of choices.) When thinking of a location I considered Venice (Vampires in Venice), wherever they shot the Pompeii episode, and I also considered the beautiful castles they constantly visit.

But I think I ended up choosing Lake Powell because of the gorgeous colours that translate so well on camera: the deep turquoise (I’m a sucker for turquoise) and the contrasting golden sand. It’s almost like an alien world on Earth. Plus, it holds such significance in the Doctor Who plot line.

Tick tock goes the clock
And what then shall we see?
Tick tock until the day
That thou shalt marry me

Tick tock goes the clock
And all the years they fly
Tick tock and all too soon
You and I must die

Tick tock goes the clock
We laughed at fate and mourned her
Tick tock goes the clock
Even for the Doctor

Tick tock goes the clock
He cradled her and he rocked her
Tick tock goes the clock
Even for the Doctor…

30DDC Day 20: Prettiest Scene

Vincent and the Doctor Starry Night Scene

Honestly, I’ll keep returning to this episode ’cause there are so many beautiful things in it, from the script to the images to the story. The Doctor, Vincent and Amy lying in the grass, to me, is one of the prettiest scenes from Doctor Who.

30DDC Day 16: Favourite Amy Moment

Amy’s Epilogue

Honestly, I already mentioned my favourite Amy moment, i.e. the one where she is so frustrated with the fact that she could not save Vincent Van Gogh and where the Doctor tells her about how the bad things do not make the good things any less important. But here, I didn’t want to repeat it, so I chose every good thing about Amy, which is probably reflected in her epilogue to the Doctor after she dies. It shows how she has changed and grown as a human being, how she is so very different from the girl in the kissagram outfit from the first episode.

Amy is probably a tied third favourite companion with Donna, after Rory and Rose.

30DDC Day 15: Favourite Donna Moment

Donna Noble Forgets

I think I already shared so many amazing Donna Noble and Doctor moments. The above is different. It broke my heart to see the Doctor have to wipe her mind.

The Doctor: I just want you to know, there are worlds out there, safe in the sky because of her. That there are people living in the light, and singing songs of Donna Noble, a thousand, million light years away. They will never forget her, while she can never remember. And for one moment… one shining moment… she was the most important woman in the whole wide universe.

30DDC Day 13: Favourite Rose Moment

I Want Chips

and

Bad Wolf

Honestly, second to Rory, Rose is one of my favourite companions and I was so happy to see that she accompanied both the 9th and 10th Doctor, and she got to come back for the 11th. If there were anyone who was the epitome of a companion, it would be Rose.

30DDC Day 12: Favourite Doctor Moment

Disclaimer: Honestly, I think there are way too many moments that were amazing to entitle my favourite, so I decided to select a random great one. Oh, and plus the 11th Doctor is the strongest in my memory, so I apologise for not choosing an amazing 9th or 10th Doctor scene. You can probably suggest some in the comment section!

Rings of Akhaten Speech

The Doctor: Okay then. That’s what I’ll do; I will tell you a story. Can you hear them? All these people who lived in terror of you and your judgement. All these people who’s ancestors devoted themselves, sacrificed themselves to you. Can you hear them singing? Oh, you like to think you’re a god. You’re not a god, you’re just a parasite, eaten out with jealousy and envy and longing for the lives of other. You feed on them, on the memory of love and loss and birth and death and joy and sorrow! So… So… Come on, then. Take mine. Take my memories. But I hope you’ve got a big appetite because I’ve lived a long life and I’ve seen a few things. I walked away from the Last Great Time War. I marked the passing of the Time Lords. I saw the birth of the universe and I watched as time ran out, moment by moment, until nothing remained. No time. No space. Just me. I walked in universes where the laws of physics were devised by the mind of a madman. I’ve watched universes freeze and creations burn. I have seen things you wouldn’t believe. I have lost things you will never understand. And I know things, secrets that must never be told and knowledge that must never be spoken. Knowledge that will make parasite gods blaze. So come on then! Take it! Take it all, baby! Have it! You have it all!

30DDC Day 11: Favourite Place Visited by the Doctor

The Library Planet, 51st Century

Honestly if I had only remembered this, I would have probably put the Vashta Nerada as my top choice in villain/alien. But my favourite place that the Doctor visited has to be the greatest library in the universe. Imagine if this were real! Imagine all the books it could contain, all the knowledge it would hold, and how many years it would take for you to even get through all the books! I’d be terrified of the Vashta Nerada – but I’d love to visit that library. Probably only during the day, in bright light, with no infestation whatsoever.

30DDC Day 10: Scene/Moment That Makes You Laugh

Donna and the Doctor’s Harvey Wallbanger Detox Scene

Frankly any scene with the Tenth Doctor and Donna are just excellent, which probably is another reason why the Tenth Doctor is so incredible. A close second would be the Donna and the Doctor scene in Partners in Crime where they mime at each other from behind windows:
